QUICK FACTS

  • Population: 1.5 million (25% of Paraguay's population) 
  • Language: Spanish and Guarani (Indian dialect)
  • People: 95% Mestizo (Indian and Spanish heritage) Over 40% of the population is under the age of 15.
  • Government: Asuncion is the capital of Paraguay. It houses the three branches of the democratic government and the elected president.
  • Geography: Paraguay is a semi-tropical country roughly the size of California.

RELIGION AND HISTORY OF THE CHURCH IN PARAGUAY

  • 85% of the people claim affiliation with the Roman Catholic Church.
  • Freedom of religion is guaranteed by the Constitution.
  • The Baptists and the Mormons have been the most successful protestant groups seeing consistent growth.
  • Currently there are 2 congregations meeting in Paraguay with a total combined membership of 35 brethren.
  • Missionary efforts were made in the 1970s by a Chilean brother named Juan Urriola and a Uruguayan named Luis Ramirez.
  • Forest McDonald has been the only American missionary to work in Paraguay. Forrest and his family worked from 1981-1985.
  • Before our current effort began, there were no American missionaries from the Lord's Church working in Paraguay
